| BUILDING DETAILS: |
123 North Main was constructed in 1883 and damaged in the 1886 fire which destroyed much of the commercial district of Uptown Butte. The building was one of the few that was not structurally damaged so remodeling the building only cost $5,000.00. At that time the cast iron store front was added. Over the years many business have operated out of 123 North Main. In 1905 the Womans Protective Union, WPU predisor to todays Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union and the nations first Union for Woman headquartered upstairs. This organization was founded in Butte in 1893 so that woman's rights would be protected in the work place. In the 1910's the Centennial Brewing Company had its offices located in the upper floor of the building. Clerke's Clothing Store was on the main floor. At this time the metal cornice was installed which joined 123 with 125. The Bohemian Buffet, a bar, was also located in the basement at that time. With the advent of prohibition the Bohemian Buffet closed and was turned into a Speakeasy. The upstairs also served as a corset factory at one time and later a house of ill repute with a passage door into the upstairs of 125 which has been preserved. Our store has operated as antique shop for the past 16 years. |
